Shopping – For those who prefer to do a little shopping, check out the gift shops locally in Munising or in Marquette. While in Marquette check out the Superior Dome, Presque Isle, the Lakefront, the malls, downtown, and “The Village” on Third Street. Marquette has a wide variety of eating establishments and movie theaters For those more adventurous, see Marquette Mountain by car or Sugar Loaf on foot. The views from both are among Michigan’s finest!

Fall Colors – Enjoy awesome fall colors in Au Train, Munising, and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Local Attractions – We recommend visiting Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. You can hike the many trails, or see the Lakeshore from the water on a Pictured Rocks Cruise.  Don’t miss the Glass Bottom Boat Tours of the Alger Underwater Preserve to view the many shipwrecks.  Scuba divers will love exploring the wrecks. You can also rent a pontoon boat for a trip along the Pictured Rocks.  Visit the many area waterfalls, both well-known and those which only the most intrepid of fall-oholics have seen.  Day trips to explore the Grand Island National Recreation Area are also highly recommended.  And don’t miss exploring, by car or mountain bike, the forest roads in the Au Train area, perhaps stopping by one of the secluded restaurants located in the surrounding forest.

Mountain Biking – The Hiawatha National Forest surrounding Northwoods Resort affords a wide variety of biking experiences. Local bike rentals available.

Snowmobiling in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is rated amongst the finest in the nation.  With our dependable snowfall, miles of well groomed trails, and the number and variety of businesses catering to snowmobilers, you’ll be coming back time and again.  Snowmobile rentals and trail permits are available locally, and you’ll enjoy easy trail access from your cabin door.

Cross-Country Skiing/Snowshoeing is fabulous. There are miles of groomed trails maintained for your use, as well as many more miles of un-groomed forest trails to follow, including the North Country Trail.

Canoe/Kayaking are also convenient at Northwoods Resort where we maintain a canoe and kayak livery offering three trips from 3 hours to all day long.

Sunrises/Sunsets are spectacular along Lake Superior, be it Au Train Bay, Grand Island, Miner’s Castle, or 12 Mile Beach.

Birdwatching – Birders have an opportunity to walk the song bird trail starting at the Au Train Lake USFS campground. Birdwatchers will also be able to see a number of interesting waterfowl along the Au Train River.

Local History – Historians can make day trips to the Munising Historical Museum, view the many historical buildings in Munising, Marquette’s Maritime Museum, Negaunee’s Iron Mining Museum, Ishpeming’s U.S. Ski Hall of Fame, Christmas’ Bay Furnace, or the ghost town at Fayette State Park.

Hunting – Autumn in Au Train affords the hunter a wide variety of game to pursue: Bear, Grouse, Woodcock, Rabbit, Deer, and waterfowl. Northwoods Resort maintains several duck blinds on Au Train Lake where you may see anything from mallards to old squaw.

Golfing – Golfers appreciate the many courses in Munising, Gwinn, Escanaba, Harvey, and Marquette-Negaunee.
